Gutters maintenance in Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex
We know that cleaning out your gutters probably doesn’t rank as one of your favorite ways to spend your weekend, but it really should be a regular item on your maintenance checklist. Gutters clogged with leaves, dirt, and other debris causes serious damage and leaves your roof at risk of leaks. Experts at Scott Exteriors recommend cleaning out your gutters at least twice a year.
How Gutters Get Clogged
Gutters are open to the elements – as the wind brings dirt and leaves and deposits them in the gutters of your home. Trees near your property can drop leaves and small branches. Even birds and squirrels can drop seeds and other debris into your gutters. Over time, small bits of debris create blockages that prevent the gutter from draining water away from your roof- which is the purpose of having gutters in the first place!
Gutters are in disrepair or are not angled property can also become clogged, allowing water to pool near your roof.
How Clogged Gutters Can Damage Your Roof
If your gutters are clogged, they cannot move water away from your roof and home. Instead, water collects against your roof and begins to seep under your shingles. If left untreated, water can eventually make its way to the plywood foundation of your roof and even into your attic beams and insulation.
Water that makes its way into your home can cause extensive (and expensive) damage to your interior.
Clogged gutters can also begin to sag and droop as water builds up.
How to Prevent Roof Leaks Caused by Clogged Gutters
The easiest way to prevent clogged gutters from damaging your roof is to keep your gutter clean. At least twice a year (we recommend in the spring and the fall), grab a bucket and a ladder and remove debris. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, hire a company that specializes in cleaning and maintaining gutters.
While you’re checking out your gutters, be sure check your downspouts, too. Make sure they are pointing away from your house to protect your foundation and landscaping.
