National Window Safety Week Tips
In addition to roofing services, Scott Exteriors provides window and siding installation services in the Dallas area. Because it's National Window Safety Week, this blog post focuses on window safety.
During National Window Safety Week (April 7-13, 2013), the National Safety Council (NSC) seeks to heighten awareness that, while windows offer a valuable secondary escape route from the home, they can also pose a fall risk to both children and adults.
To prevent accidental falls or injuries from windows the NSC suggests the following:
- • Keep windows closed and locked when children are around
- • When opening windows for ventilation, open windows that children cannot reach
- • Don't rely on insect screens to prevent a fall, as they are designed to provide ventilation and not to prevent a child's fall from a window
- • Keep furniture, or anything children can climb, away from windows
- • Determine your family's emergency escape plan and practice it regularly
- • Make sure nothing is blocking or preventing a window from being opened in the case of an emergency
Download the NSC’s full safety window checklist here and make it a priority this spring to check windows, looking for drafts, gaps from windows that will not close and chipped or peeling paint. Any of these issues could mean that windows aren’t fitting properly and may pose a safety hazard to your family.
